“Your husband has been cheating on you,” Rukie repeated
as Kelechi stood there, in a mixture of shock and confusion, staring at the
phone in her hand like it was some alien object. “That’s a picture of him
with the woman. She’s actually a friend of mine. When I saw him yesterday, I
recognized him and was shocked. I had to leave before he saw me, because it
would have been very awkward.”
“Is this some sort of a joke?” Kelechi asked in a shaky voice.
“Unfortunately, it is reality. There are more pictures, that one
is just one of them.”
The picture she showed Kelechi was actually one of her and Tade,
but she had cropped it in such a way that her face did not show, while his did.
It was a picture of them snuggling in bed, which she had taken way back.
She took the phone from Kelechi and opened another picture, which
showed them wearing swimsuit and smooching on a beach. This time, not only was her
head cropped off, a large part of her body was too, while Tade's image remained
in full view.
“They took this one in Zanzibar just 2 months ago.”
Kelechi gave a small shout and the phone dropped from her hand.
“He did go to Zanzibar two months ago, but he told me it was a
business trip...”
The shock she had been in melted away, catalyzed by the
realization that the pictures were real, and she began to sob.
“Oh no, Tade, Tade, you have killed me," she moaned
uncontrollably.
It was a good thing there was no else in the store with them as
the salesgirl had gone on an errand; no one else to witness her melt down.
Rukie tried to console her. “You just have to be strong. These
men, they can be demons. My friend was even more devastated than you when I
told her what I saw yesterday. He had made her believe he was single and promised
to marry her.”
“Who is the girl sef?
What is her name, where does she live? I need to see the home-breaker, I need
to see the woman that has been messing around with my husband!" Fury was
now replacing Kelechi's pain.
“Calm down, babe. The poor girl is not the issue here. Your
husband deceived her. Sorry to say, he is
the scum here and he is the one you should be mad at, not her. Like I said
before, she is my friend too, so I can't release her identify to you. That's
why I cropped her face out of those pictures. I just wanted you to know what
your husband has been up to.”
Kelechi continued to shake with rage and pain. “Ah, Tade,
Tade...." She suddenly grabbed at her phone and began to scroll fast
through it.
“Wait, what are you trying to do?” Rukie arrested her wrist.
“I want to call the bastard and give him a piece of my mind, of
course. I want to let him know that one of us will meet God in heaven today...
I want to...”
“Don't be silly.” Rukie took the phone from her. “You don't need
all that. After all is said and done, he will just beg you, or call a family
meeting at worst, and it will be settled. Who lost? You. Even if you divorce
him, who lost? Still you. My dear, don't get mad, get even.”
“Get even, how?”
Rukie exhaled. "You know, it's funny that yesterday when I
suggested something that would help you make fast money, you went ‘I'm a
married woman o, I can't cheat on my husband o’. Only for you to find out now that
your dear husband is cheating on you. Anyway, if you pay him back in his own
coins, God no go vex. And in the process, you will make some quick, tidy cash.”
“Look, Vera, I can't do that thing. Even if I'm angry with my
husband, I can't let any dirty old man be touching my body for money.”
“Who said anything about old men? So you think it’s only old men
that spend money on women? My dear, I am very selective, I don't date old men. Let
me show you something.” She scrolled through her phone and fished out the
picture of a man in his thirties who used to be her gigolo, but was converted
to a friend during her relationship with Tade.
“Here's one of the men I am talking about. See how clean and
good looking he is? He's a young millionaire and does not spend less than 250k
on a woman per meeting. And he’s the least spender amongst the men I know.
Imagine how much money you will make within a month or two with such men.”
Kelechi looked at the picture, then handed the phone back. Rukie
tried to read her expression but could not tell if she had won her over or
not.
The store door opened at that moment. It was the salesgirl,
returning from the errand.
Rukie stood up and whispered to Kelechi, “Sweetie, it’s your
choice sha. Do you want to fight your
husband or do you want to get even and get rich in the process?”
With that, she said farewell.
She hoped Kelechi would do the latter but consoled herself that even
if she decided to confront her husband instead, she had at least succeeded in
getting back at Tade, though not to the extent she had planned.
Her phone rang before she got home. It was Kelechi.
“I have thought about all you said, Vera,” she announced, “and I
am interested in dating those men.”
